Creating Belonging Abroad: My Journey with Erasmus in Prague

Prague was a city I fell in love with at first sight.
What started as a short visit turned into something much bigger when I got the opportunity to study here through Erasmus. And as exciting as it was, I quickly understood something that every exchange student feels at some point: being in a new country can be both inspiring and lonely at the same time.
That’s why communities matter. So when I had the chance to join the Erasmus in Prague organization as a Social Media Coordinator, I didn’t hesitate. I knew how important it was to create spaces where students could feel like they belong, connect with others, and truly experience the culture around them.
Turning Events into Experiences
My role went far beyond just posting on social media.
I worked on:
Creating visual content for Instagram and event promotion
Building marketing materials and communication plans to boost event visibility
Supporting events on-site, from logistics to media coverage, ensuring everything ran smoothly
But what we were really building wasn’t just events. It was experiences.
From friend-speeding sessions to help students connect, to running clubs and art clubs that brought people together through shared interests, to trips across the Czech Republic that helped students explore beyond Prague - every initiative had the same goal: helping people feel at home in a place that wasn’t originally theirs.
We also collaborated with brands to secure student-friendly deals and sponsorships, making these experiences more accessible and valuable for our community.
Growing a Community Through Content
A big part of my work focused on growing engagement on Instagram.
By refining content strategy, improving visuals, and aligning posts with what students actually cared about, we were able to significantly expand our reach:
1,000,000+ profile views on Instagram
1,000+ new followers gained
14,000+ reactions generated across content
These weren’t just numbers. They reflected a growing community of students actively engaging, participating, and showing up.
Bridging Social Media and HR
After building momentum on social platforms, I wanted to connect this experience back to my HR background. That’s when I took the initiative to rebuild the organization’s LinkedIn presence from scratch.
I shifted my focus toward:
Positioning the organization as a credible and attractive brand
Creating content aligned with employer branding and community storytelling
Supporting intern recruitment, from sourcing to interviewing candidates
Over time, the results became clear:
Engagement rate increased to 71%
Search visibility improved by up to 80%
At that point, my role naturally expanded into a mix of employer branding, sourcing, and community growth.
What This Experience Meant to Me
This journey was more than just a role. It was personal. Because I was not just organizing events or creating content for students. I was one of them.
I understood what it felt like to arrive in a new city, not knowing anyone, trying to find your place. And that perspective shaped everything I did. It also helped me realize something important about my career: I enjoy working at the intersection of people, storytelling, and community.
Whether it’s through social media, events, or HR initiatives, the goal remains the same: to bring people together, help them feel seen, and create something they want to be part of.
And sometimes, all it takes is one event, one post, or one conversation to make a new place feel like home.
